COVID 19 Social Distancing Guidelines and Risk Assessment

The following guidelines have been drawn up to help minimise the transmission of the virus during classes at Dulwich Ballet School (DBS), with reference to the current Government guidelines. They will be in place for the foreseeable future and will be reviewed and updated as Government guidelines change.

If you or members of your household / bubble show symptoms of COVID-19, or are in isolation due to being in contact with someone with the symptoms, you must let us know and your child must not attend any classes.

All our registers are now electronic and we have up-to-date contact details for all our students via the Class4Kids secure website if we need to contact parents for any reason.

  • Each of our venues will have their own COVID-19 guidelines which we will adhere to and are available on request.
  • All venues will be cleaned regularly.
  • Each venue will have a maximum number of students for each class, reflecting the 1 metre plus social distancing guidelines.
  • Where possible, there will be a separate entrance and exit for each class. Where this is not possible, there will be clear guidelines for students to arrive and leave their class.
  • Students and parents should avoid gathering together near the entrance and exit to the studio and should maintain social distancing at all times.
  • There are currently no waiting facilities for parents or students during classes at any venues.
  • Before class, students must wait outside the studio until the teacher asks them to come in.
  • There will be no facilities to leave belongings (coats, shoes, etc) in communal areas. Any items left behind at the end of classes will be retained until the following week’s class. It will not be possible to retrieve lost property between classes.
  • Barres and high frequency touch surfaces will be cleaned between each class.
  • Where possible, doors and windows will be opened at venues to maximise ventilation. However, due to some venues’ location within residential areas and for security reasons, this may be limited after 6pm or sunset.
  • Dulwich Ballet School and the venues are not responsible for any loss of personal items incurred by students.
  • Dulwich Ballet School requests all payments to be made via the Class4Kids website or by bank transfer. Cash or cheque payments are only by prior arrangement in advance with the Principal.

Students - Please note that according to Government Guidelines: "all forms of face coverings may restrict breathing efficiency and should not be used during exercise except on specific advice from a physician". https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/providers-of-grassroots-sport-and-gym-leisure-facilities

  • Students and parents bringing children to class are required to take a measure of responsibility for themselves and to others to help reduce the spread of infection.
  • Students and parents should not arrive more than 5 minutes before the start of their class and need to leave within 5 minutes of their class finish time.
  • Where possible, only one adult should bring or collect children.
  • Students should wait outside the studio until the teacher asks them to come in. Students will not be able to enter a studio until the previous class has finished and all students have left. When waiting outside, students and parents should maintain social distancing guidelines.
  • Where possible and to limit use of communal changing areas, students should arrive in uniform with minimal changing needed and with hair ready for dancing in the appropriate style. Ballet or tap shoes must not be worn outside – outdoor shoes must be worn and students will change into their dance shoes once in the studio. They should minimise personal belongings brought into the studio. The venues and DBS are not responsible for any losses incurred by students attending class.
  • All ballet uniform must be washed regularly after class, ideally every week.
  • Students should bring their own labelled and filled water bottle if required. We request that plastic disposable water bottles are not brought to class. Students will not be allowed to share water bottles. There will be no access to kitchen facilities.
  • DBS expect hand sanitiser to be available at all venues and teachers will be provided with their own supply by DBS. However, for speed of access and to minimise cost, we ask that students bring their own, perhaps keeping a small bottle in their ballet bag. Students must use hand sanitiser on entering the studio.
  • Teachers at DBS will adapt their teaching methods and practice to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
  • Some syllabus dances will be adapted to remove any close physical contact between students, as advised by the examination bodies.
  • Sharing of props, mats and therabands will not be allowed. Students will need to bring their own mat or towel for body conditioning classes. Teachers will advise what is required.
  • Students should try to avoid using the toilet facilities at venues unless necessary. If they do need to use the toilet, they should take special care to thoroughly wash their hands before returning to class.
  • Students are requested to take any rubbish home with them.

  • A 5 – 10 minute gap has been added between each class to minimise contact between classes.
  • Students will need to remain in the same class for the whole term. It may be possible to change class after half-term, but this is not guaranteed.
  • It will not be possible to attend a different class as a one-off to make up missed sessions.
  • Students are only able to attend the body conditioning class that is directly after their ballet class.
  • Current students wishing to try a new class can only do so in the first two weeks of term or after half-term. They must inform us in advance and be on the register for that class.
  • New students will only be able to start classes in the first two weeks or after half-term. They must be registered with us before starting classes.
  • We expect all teachers to remain teaching the same classes for the whole term.
