Welcome back to the Summer Term at Dulwich Ballet School. We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and are looking forward to your dance classes this term!

Ballet, tap and modern exams this term

We have been given two dates from the Royal Academy of Dance for the Ballet exams this term and they are on Sunday 18th June (extra practises on Saturday 20th May, Saturday 27th May or Saturday 3rd June, and Saturday 10th June) and Thursday 29th June (extra practises on Saturday 10th, 17th and 24th June). The closing date for entries is Friday 5th May, so please remember to confirm either way if your child has been asked to do their exam this term. We are in the process of sorting a date for the tap and modern exams in July (TBC).

Show – Sleeping Beauty and King of Pop: Well done to all students who appeared in the latest production in February, it was fabulous and a credit to all involved in the production, choreography and dancing. It showed an array of talent in DBS & long may it continue to be the case. Photographs of the dress rehearsals are now available to view and buy from Infinite Photography and details will be circulated in a separate email.  We hope to produce the next ‘big one’ in February 2019 and hope to be able to use the MCT @ Alleyn’s. Anyone with any knowledge of funding, who could help this happen, I would be grateful to hear from.

Classes and Timetable: There have been a few changes to timetable, but we have tried to keep it to a minimum. Lots of factors involved which include class sizes, studio space and time, and teacher availability.

New Classes:  There are plenty of classes on offer at DBS – ballet, tap, syllabus & non syllabus modern classes, body conditioning, adult tap, vocational ballet classes, pointe work classes. If you are interested in trying anything new please contact either myself or Liz for details. We hope to start contemporary dance in September, more information will follow.

Summer School:  The dates are 24th – 28th July. After the success of previous Summer Schools we will be offering another week of fun in different dance styles. I would really like to offer one this year and will give a cut-off date for applications. We will supply you with application forms before half term and places will be limited and on a first come, first served basis. In previous years, students have enjoyed ballet classes, modern/jazz dance, learning dances from the classical ballets, choreography and character, ballroom and latin dance with guest teachers. The students give a small performance on the last day. The course will be open to students from Grade 1 upwards.

Second Hand Uniform Sale: We will be running a second hand uniform sale on Tuesday 25th April from 4.30pm – 6.00pm @ St. Faiths Centre in the Upper Youth Area and Saturday 29th April from 9.30am – 11am @ Grafton Dance School.  I do not have a huge stock but there are a few leotards (various colours), some ballet shoes, plenty of tap/character shoes, 3-4 character skirts. If you have anything to sell please hand to the teachers before these dates. I will not be taking any other second hand uniform after this until September.

Student News:  There has been exciting news in the last few months.

·      Hannah Wallace, our very own Aurora, has successfully auditioned for Laban Conservatoire on the Degree course for Classical/Contemporary Ballet.

·      Pearl Schomberg, our Golden Vine Fairy, has been offered a place on the Musical Theatre course at the Laban Conservatoire.

Congratulations to both Hannah and Pearl!

·      Asa Cornish and Eddie White, who are on the Junior Associate Programme at The Royal Ballet School, have successfully auditioned for White Lodge and the Mid Associate programme. Eddie will be leaving us at the end of this term to attend White Lodge School full time and Asa will be attending the Mid Associate classes on Saturday. Congratulations to them both.  Asa has performed with the Royal Ballet Company at the Royal Opera House in Anastasia and Eddie has also performed with them in The Sleeping Beauty. Asa will be performing in August with the Mariinsky Russian Ballet Company in Anna Karenina on 3rd & 4th August. There are a few tickets left if you would like to support him.

·      Izzy Benham is on the short waiting list for Senior Associates at The Royal Ballet School, we wish her luck.

·      Zahra Van Nguyen will be performing in London Children’s Ballet production of The Secret Garden at The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith on 30th – 31st May.

·      Katharine Limb will be performing in The Sleeping Beauty with English Youth Ballet at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th August.

Many students have auditioned for summer schools and we hope that they will be successful.

We also have many students on the CAT scheme at the Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, Creekside and The Place.

Exciting Future News: The Ballet School might be involved in a new blockbuster film, I am currently in negotiations, so watch this space!
